  1. What is Poker?

Poker is a well-known skill-based game that is based on the probability of getting different combinations in different scenarios. The game not only includes skill, but also a precocious strategy to win. It is played with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 9 players on a table. There are many variants of poker such as Texas Holdem, Pot-limit Omaha (PLO), Omaha Hi/Lo, Holdem++, and Crazy Pineapple but the most popular one is Texas Holdem. You can also play free online poker as a beginner to get hands-on the game and develop the strategies gradually.

Let us understand the Texas Holdem first. It is a five-card game where the best combination of five out of seven cards makes a winning hand. The best combination is obtained from the various hand rankings in a predefined order made for poker.

The combination that is mentioned above is made out of two Hole cards, i.e. face down Individual cards (Private cards) and five face-up Community cards that are on the board.

  1. Hole Cards -  The two private cards dealt in a face-down position to each player at the beginning of the deal. These are not visible to any other player on the table except the player holding these i.e you (Self).

  2. Community Cards - These are the board cards or the five cards on the board that is dealt in a face-up position which is used by all the players on the table to form hands or a combination. These are visible to all the players on the table. Another name for community cards is Board.

   2.  How to play poker?

The game consists of six betting rounds each of one is explained in detail:

  1. Dealt - 1st betting round where each player is dealt with 2 hole cards.

  2. Preflop - 2nd betting round before Flop which means before opening up of three community cards. In this round blinds (forced bet by the system to start betting) are posted without seeing the community cards and hence this is known as the Pre-flop round.

  3. Flop - 3rd betting round where 3 community cards are dealt face-up on the table.

  4. Turn - 4thbetting round where the 4th community card is dealt face-up on the table including the ones at flop round.

  5. River - 5th betting round where 5th community card is dealt face-up on the table including the ones at the flop and turn round.

  6. Showdown - 6th and last betting round where players compare and show their hands to find the winner.

The best five-card arrangement can be formed using 5 community cards and 2 hole cards in any one of the forms mentioned below in the Texas Holdem poker format:

0 Hole card + 5 community cards = 5

1 Hole card + 4 Community cards = 5

2 Hole cards + 3 Community cards = 5
