How To Win At Rummy Games

How To Win At Rummy Games

Rummy is a massively entertaining card game that is popular across the globe. It is a simple game to learn but requires practice if you want to master it. Along with how to play Rummy cards, you must also know how to modify your game plan as per the constantly changing situation on the game table. You have to make quick decisions to create the best sets and sequences of cards before your opponent.

Here are some important tips to improve your winning possibilities at the Rummy tables -

Arrange the cards

To figure out the best possible combination of cards, sort and arrange them properly. Start with the pure sequence first (arrangement of cards of the same suit without the Joker card) as if your opponent declares the game before you, you will lose the game and end up with higher penalty points in the absence of a pure sequence. If you already have a pure sequence available in your hand, all you need to do is create the impure sequences/sets.

Analyze the cards

Check the wild cards, connecting cards, and color (red, black) of the maximum cards you have in your hand to speculate what cards your opponent might need and create a game plan accordingly.

Calculate possibilities

If you find that you won’t be able to create the best card combination with the in-hand cards before your opponent, it is advisable to drop the game and save your  maximum points. You can still play in this situation but your winning completely depends on the possibility to get the required cards from the closed deck and the chances of your opponent throwing your desired cards in the discarded pile.

Pay attention to your opponent’s moves

You can predict what cards your opponent is holding and the combinations he is trying to make by observing his actions. Keep a close eye on what cards your opponent is discarding and what he is picking from the open deck. These findings help you guess the potential sequence/set he is creating and identify the cards he requires. If he is taking time making his move, you can assume that he is still figuring out which cards to keep and which to throw. If he acts quickly, that means he has already sorted his cards and started working on creating the combinations.

Use the Joker card

Joker cards are used to form the impure sequences. You can use them as ‘wild cards’ to replace any missing card. For example - You have 5 of Spades and 5 of Hearts. Now you need 5 of Clubs or Diamonds to create an impure set. If you have a Joker card with you, you can use it as a replacement for the third card.

If you are a newbie, you can play free Rummy game online to learn the very basics. The most popular variants of Rummy are 13 Card and 21 Card. You can play the game in cash game and tournament formats with real money online and win mind-blowing cash rewards. Rummy apps are also available to download on your iOS or Android devices.

Poker - What is a Sit-N-Go Tournament

How to play Poker Sit-N-Go games

Sit-N-Go (SNG), also called single table tournament, can be played between 6 to 10 players. It is best for players who don’t want to commit to the table for a long period of time.

The objective of a Sit-N-G0 game is to earn all the chips of the opponents by outwitting them. There is no scheduled starting time of the tournament. Whenever you want to play, you can sit on a vacant seat on the game table. As soon as a specific number of players join the table, the game begins. To play, each player pays the buy-in and gets a fixed number of chips.

An SNG tournament usually ends within an hour. The playing rules are similar to MTT (Multi-table tournaments). There is a lot of learning material out there to help you learn how to play Poker game, basic rules, betting structure, and playing styles.

If you lose all your chips during the game, you cannot re-buy to join the tables again. The last remaining player on the table becomes the winner and gets the biggest portion of the prize pool. The rest of the prize pool is divided among the top finishers as per the tournament rules.

Types of SNGs

SNGs are categorized on the basis of the number of participants such as 2 handed (heads-up), 4-handed, 6-handed, 9-handed, etc. Every tournament has its own set of rules related to prize pool distribution. In a 2-handed game, the winner gets the entire prize money. In a 6-handed game, the prize pool is split between the top two finishers.

Blinds increase at a steady rate as the tournament progresses (every 10 minutes). You can get all the information about the blind structure in the tournament lobby.

Turbo SNGs

Turbo is a popular SNG format. In a Turbo tournament, the blind raises much quickly as compared to the regular format. A Turbo tournament can be played in Super Turbo and Hyper Turbo formats. In both of these formats, blinds increase swiftly. You have to take quick decisions as per the constantly changing situation on the game table.

Other popular variants of SNGs -

Satellite SNGs - The players can win entry to a larger buy-in live or online tournament.

Knockout Bounty - The player earns ‘bounty’ by eliminating other players from the tournament. For every opponent you knock out, you get bonus rewards.

Double Or Nothing - In this type of SNG tournaments, you can either win double your buy-in or nothing at all. You don’t have to be among the top finishers to earn the reward. When 50% of the total participants get eliminated due to losing their chips, the remaining 50% players get double their buy-in. The eliminated players get nothing from the total prize money.

At online Poker platforms, SNG games are available around the clock. Whenever you want, you can log in to your Poker account and join the tables. Along with the cash prizes, another great benefit of playing online is that you can avail amazing Poker bonus offers, deposit deals, loyalty programs, leaderboard points, and much more. You can also download a Poker app on your Android or iOS device to enjoy playing SNG games as per your convenience.

Poker Tournaments - How They Work

A tournament is a series of games where the participants compete against each other for the Champion title and the top prize. The competition usually consists of multiple matches and based on the results of these matches, the ultimate winner ((individual or team) is determined.

A Poker tournament is a challenging but highly interesting format of the game where Poker players exhibit their skills to outwit opponents and win their share from the guaranteed prize pools.

Texas Poker is the most popular Poker tournament variant played across the globe. You need to pay the buy-in (entry fee) to gain entry into the tournament. The Poker room/online Poker platform takes a small portion of the buy-in for their service and the rest of it forms the prize pool.

Each participant receives the same amount of virtual chips at the beginning of the tournament. Your goal is to finish in the top position by winning all the chips in play and eliminating other players from the table.

If you leave the table during the game, you earn nothing from the prize pool. If you are among the last finishers, you will receive a share of the total prize money on the basis of your finishing position. The winner gets the largest portion of the prize pool.

You can participate in card games online SnG (Sit and Go) or MTT (Multi-Table Tournament) with real money and take home fabulous rewards. In an SnG tournament, you can join a table anytime as the game starts whenever the tables are full. MTTs start at a specific time and you need to register yourself first to join the game table.

Types of Poker tournaments:

Rebuy Tournament
In this format, you can rebuy chips to remain seated on the table when you lose all your chips while playing. The rebuy time is limited and once it expires, the player cannot buy more chips. Usually, the re-buy amount is the same as the initial buy-in amount.

There are two types of rebuy tournaments:
  1. Limited Re-Buy: You can rebuy only for the limited number of times during the rebuy period.
  2. Unlimited Re-Buy: You can re-buy an unlimited number of times during the rebuy period.

Freeze-out Tournament
In this format, the players cannot re-buy when they are out of chips. It is the simplest tournament format where once you lose all your chips, you are out of the tournament as you cannot add more chips to your stack to return to the table.

Re-Entry Tournament
This format allows you to re-enter the tournament once you get eliminated. If you bust during the late registration period, you can register yourself again by paying the buy-in and enter the tournament as a new player. You cannot re-enter once the late registration period ends.

Satellite Tournament
Satellites are qualifying tournaments which reward you with entry tickets for various major online or offline Poker tournaments. It provides players with the opportunity to participate in expensive tournaments with big prize pools without paying their huge buy-in. You can play a satellite with nominal buy-in and instead of money, win a seat to bigger buy-in tournaments as the prize.

Five Habits of a Poker Pro - A Detailed Analysis

Have you ever given a thought on how a person can play poker online and win millions in a day, and the next day can be down on the knees. Like an unforgiving roller coaster ride, Poker is a game that has a wide, varied following around the world. While playing poker, you will come across players that have amazingly detailed reads, finest decision makings and other traits that are only associated with a successful poker player.

So, what exactly are the habits that make a professional poker player different from a seasoned live poker player or a casual online poker player? Let's consider the following seven habits of a Poker Pro:

Before analyzing the habits in details, you should be aware that professional poker players are the ones who play in global tournaments. They do not play poker as past time, and do not register on different sites to avail Poker Bonus offers. Poker is their job and their livelihood depends on it. Moreover, poker players live two lives wherein they surround themselves with trustworthy and honest people in personal life, while have to treat their friends as enemies during poker tournaments on professional front. Henceforth, poker player are strong enough to control mind and heart while balancing their non-poker and poker life.

Eye for Detail

Every poker pro has a knack for noticing even the tiniest of details and remembering them. They don’t let any information get pass them, though they may use that information while playing poker. Detail-oriented players also find it easy to read the players while they are dealing with the cards on the poker table.

Optimistic

Pessimism and cynicism will not take you anywhere in poker. Establishing a positive frame of mind is very important in poker. If a bad beat is breaking you down and is taking you to the scenarios you wanted to avoid then you are not cut out for the pressure. Having a positive mind structure is not going to take you to the very top of the charts, but it will surely help you stay in the game longer and that is all you want – to stay in the game and win.

Provident & Prudent

This one might come as a bit of a surprise but most of the successful poker players are very tight with their money and how they spend it, at least on the table. Such players keep separate bankroll for personal and professional spends. So, don't get overwhelmed by the ‘show-off’ culture shown on the television.

Fit & Healthy

The importance of being physically fit cannot be overemphasized. You have to have the energy to sit at the poker table, live or online, for 12 hours at a stretch and that will only be possible if you are physically fit and healthy.

Tilt Control

Besides the habits that we have discussed before, tilt control is the one that rules at the top. For every poker player, it is important to control their emotions to give their best in the game. You will never find any poker pro playing the game in a sad, mad or bad mood. So, if you show even a slight possibility that you can be cracked, your opponents will not hesitate to take advantage of it.

Types of Poker Tables

Picking the right poker table type is as important as learning the rules of poker and playing the hand.
The first and foremost thing you should look at when choosing the right table to play at is the game type. There are two types of games:

1. Cash (Ring) games – On these tables you play with real money, i.e. your chip stack has a real monetary value. If you win a $200 pot, you can instantly close the table, request cash out, and spend this money in any way you wish. Stakes on cash tables are static - they do not increase with time. Whenever you lose your whole stack, you can instantly re-buy and continue to play and win cash.

2. Tournaments – In tournaments, you play with chips that have no monetary value. If you win a $200 pot, you cannot leave the table and cash it out. Chips here serve only as a score. If you lose all your chips, you are out of the tournament unless it allows re-buys in early stages. Stakes increase with time to speed up players’ elimination. Out of the total sum of tournament buy-in's, a prize pool is formed and distributed between a small number of players that finish at best places. Given below are the common tournament types:

· Multi-table tournaments (MTT) – these tournaments have scheduled start times, lots of players, and big prizes for the winners. They can be very lengthy, taking several hours to complete.

· Freerolls – this is actually a special type of MTT. Everything is identical to regular multi-table tournaments except there is no entry fee. You can register completely free and compete for a real money prize pool.

· Sit-and-Go’s – such tournaments begin as soon as the last required player registers. For example, a 10-player Sit-and-Go will start immediately after the 10th player joins the table. They finish much faster than MTT’s and are very popular.

The second thing you should consider is the maximum number of players allowed to sit at the table. These are divided into three groups:

1. Full ring – these tables allow up to 10 (sometimes 9) players. They offer the least action out of all table types. Because you post blinds every tenth hand, there is no need to play “any two” cards. You can wait for premium starting hands and still end up with a nice profit.

2. Shorthanded – here up to 6 (sometimes 5, very rarely 4) players are allowed. Shorthanded games tend to be much more aggressive as you have to post blinds much more often than in full ring. No longer can you wait for premium starting hands. Your range needs to be wider if you want to become a winning player. Shorthanded poker is currently the most popular on the Internet.

3. Heads up – no more than two players are allowed. This is the most aggressive and demanding table type. You post blind every hand (small blind at one time, big blind at the other). To survive at heads up tables, you have to learn to play hands you would call a complete garbage at full ring or shorthanded tables. Otherwise, you will just get “blinded” to death.

Specialized Tables

Most tables, no matter if they are full ring, shorthanded, or heads up, are conventional, that is,  where you have 30 seconds of time to bet, and  you can buy in for a maximum of 100 big blinds (applies to No-Limit and Pot-Limit variants), and all you can win is your opponent’s stack (or tournament prize). From time to time you will come across tables with a bit different rules. Here are few examples:

· Fast (or Turbo) – at these tables you have less time for your decision. It can be 20 seconds or even less. Choose them only if you are a quick thinker. There are also Turbo Sit-and-Go's, where blind levels increase at much faster rate than usual.

· Deep – can be found only in No-Limit and Pot-Limit games. Such tables allow buying in for more than 100 big blinds. The maximum is usually 200 big blinds. For example, you will be able to buy in for $400 at a $1/$2 table, instead of the standard $200. In deep poker games online, most crucial decisions are made post flop and they involve more psychology than usual.

· Jackpot – you can win in two ways at such tables. In addition to winning your opponent’s stack, you can also win a share of a special prize pool, called jackpot, after meeting the requirements. There are bad beat jackpots, where players are awarded, when, for example somebody loses with four of a kind or a higher hand. There are also jackpots that award players for hitting very rare hands, for example royal flush but only of one suit.

If you are a new player, we strongly recommend to start with ordinary full ring tables. You will be able to play only the best starting hands there and your decisions will be relatively easy.

Online Poker: What is Responsible Gaming

What is Responsible Gaming

Easy availability of smart devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc. with fast internet connectivity has revolutionized gaming in a number of ways. Games like Poker and rummy lift our mood and make us smarter and happier. They improve intelligence and strengthen the ability to learn new things and solve problems.

According to ‘Chanakya Neeti’, excess of everything is harmful. Playing for long hours day and night can put an adverse effect on your mind and body.

Responsible gaming is a concept which every online Poker player must know to protect himself from the negative impacts of overplaying. Here are the guidelines you should follow to ensure having a positive online gaming experience -

Your ultimate goal to play a game should always be to have fun. Poker helps you sharpen your mental abilities and also provide opportunities to showcase your talent in front of the world. Don’t play the game with the sole objective of making money. Also, not play at stakes more than what you can afford to risk. Your personal life and financial status should not be affected by playing real money games.

Play only when you are in your best mental state. Don’t sit on a real money table if you are feeling angry, frustrated, or tired.

You can exclude yourself from tables whenever you want. If you find yourself unable to maintain balance between the virtual world and real life, you can easily put restrictions on the controls and features for a certain duration of time by contacting the gaming website.

You can restrict yourself from depositing money in your gaming account more than what you want to invest on the tables on daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Setting a ‘deposit-limit’ is the best way to control your spending habits. You can also put a limit on playing on certain cash tables or tournaments.

You can set a ‘time-limit” based on how much time you want to spend on the tables. If you notice that you have started playing longer than what you had planned, you can request the site to help you set your limits. Regardless of whether you win or loss, make it a habit to always leave the table at the predetermined time.

Chasing losses is one of the costliest mistakes a player can make on the Poker table. When you lose money, don’t try to recover it by increasing the bet size in the next hand or playing at stakes higher than what you usually play at. The feelings of anxiousness can put you on tilt and push you to make illogical decisions. Always maintain your calm and composure on the table regardless of the complexity of the situation to ensure not making emotion-based decisions.

All major Poker sites in India are dedicated to providing the ‘high-quality’ online gaming experience to users. Players below 18 years of age are not allowed to play real money games online. The registration process includes verification of player’s age to identify minors and prevent them from logging in. If the site finds any player with incorrect information about his age, it can forfeit the complete chip balance in his account and even take legal actions against him.

A good player knows when is the best time to take a break from the tables and how much money he needs to spend to play games. It’s your responsibility to follow the game rules and maintain discipline in order to ensure having a safe and enjoyable Poker playing experience.

Players can get benefit several poker bonus running on different poker sites.

Online Poker is a lot of fun and excitement. What’s important is to play only those games that suit your knowledge, skills, experience, and finances.

Boom of Artificial Intelligence in Poker World

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has been unravelling its footprints in the poker industry. Scientists from across the globe are experimenting to develop an authentic Artificial Intelligence that will be capable of playing poker. The world has already experienced many significant breakthroughs in AI industry. Alexa and Siri are famous AI assistants in the world. Tesla car, a self driving car, is another great example of AI.

The game of online poker involves loads of incomplete information which makes the game quite complex like many real life situations; and this is the key reason that AI departments of big universities are playing around with poker.

This is not for the first time that AI will be used in gaming industry. Did you know IBM's Deep Blue developed by Carnegie Mellon University beat Garry Kasparov, chess world champion in the re-match in 1997? And Google AlphaGo AI won the game GO by defeating the best player Lee Sedol.
Artificial Intelligence faces its own sort of problems when dealing with online poker games. Here’s what the AI technology has to prevail over:

AI   Poker
Imperfect Knowledge -  Opponent's hands are hidden
Risk Management   -  Betting strategies and their consequences
Agent Modelling -  Identifying opponent patterns and exploiting them
Deception -  Bluffing and varying style of play
Unreliable Information  - Handling your opponents deceptive plays

Significant Achievements of Poker AI
  • 1984-The basic poker AI software Orac was created by Mike Caro to compete in WSOP
  • 1997 - UoA released Loki-poker AI focused on Limit Hold'em variation
  • 2003 - Poker AI developers began to shift from the Chess methodology model
  • 2009 - University of Auckland introduces Sartes
  • 2012 - Bellagio casino in Las Vegas installed a US$2 / US$4 Limit Hold'em bot that everyone could play against
  • 2015 - Limit Hold'em is solved by Cepheus poker bot developed by University of Alberta
  • 2016 - Many AIs took part of in ACPC (Annual Computer Poker Competition). To name a few, Slumbot by former Google engineer Eric Jackson and Act 1 (finished second in the Instant Runoff Competition) by a CMU Ph.D student
  • 2017 - Deepstack AI bot from University of Alberta which can beat poker pros; and a mystery AI from CMU crushes best poker players
Benefits of Poker AI over Human
  • AI doesn’t make bad decisions when tired.
  • AI is a risk taker, it doesn’t value money - if it has a 10% chance of winning US$ 20000 against a 90% of winning nothing or a guaranteed US$ 1999, it will always take the 10% risk.
  • AI has no emotions and is unaffected by tilt.
  • AI can identify specific weaknesses in players.
  • AI is better than online bots as it follows balanced, non-exploitative approach.
Future Trends of AI in Poker Circuit
So far, Libratus has emerged as a poker AI that has out bluffed the best players. In 2017, Libratus, a heads-up AI by CMU made the most decisive blow in the history of human versus poker AI. Libratus beat 4 best players and won at a rate of US$ 14.72 per hand. The challenge lasted for 120,000 hands wherein each hand started with 20,000 chips with the 50/100 blinds. This extraordinary poker AI relies on an algorithm that computes the strategy, randomizes its actions to make opponents uncertain of when it is bluffing, and analyzes its own play every night and corrects mistakes, playing differently each day.

The next challenge for poker AI is to play against multiple players all at once. AI is capable to ram in 20,000 years of human work every week as electronic circuits function a million times faster than biochemical ones. AI will offer an extra layer of security because cyber security is expected to boost big data, intelligence, and analytics spending to US$ 96 billion by 2021.

The Ultimate Question: Is Poker a Game of Skills or Luck?

Is Poker a Game of Skill or Luck

From the past few years, the popularity of online Poker in India is increasing at a tremendous rate. While the game has been around for decades, it has started gaining momentum after the advent of the internet. The technology has made it possible for people to play this highly entertaining card game online as per their convenient timings.

The game appeals to adrenaline-junkies and challenge-seekers who love to test their gaming prowess. Still, some people perceive it as a game based on luck. It may seem hard to believe, but it’s true that many of us don’t consider Poker playing a good mental exercise.

The wrong perception about the nature of the game is still holding people from experiencing the unlimited full and thrill involved in it.  Here, we are going to dispel the most common myth that prevails among the masses that Poker is a chance-based game.

In reality, Poker is a game of maths, logic, and probability. In India, people paint Poker and other casino games like roulette, craps, or slot machines, etc with the same brush. Luck-based games are those games where a player cannot influence the outcome of the game in any way. In Poker, your winning completely depends on your ability to read your opponents and apply your understanding of mathematical concepts at the game table. You can win once or twice due to luck, but to survive at the game table for a long time, you have to learn how to make quick decisions based on your hand strength, table position, chip stack, table image and opponent’s level of skills. Even if you are dealt with a poor/average cards, you can still manage to beat opponents and win the hand if you implement critical thinking, patience, and strategies in the game. As you cannot see your opponent’s cards, you have to observe your opponent’s body language, playing style, and betting pattern to predict how he is going to make his next move. You have to develop strategies on the basis of the dynamic situation at the game table to outplay your opponents and win the pot.

Unlike a chance-based game, experience matters a lot in Poker. You have to understand the concepts of human behavior, money management, time management, probability, and deception. You must acquire the theoretical knowledge as well as the practical experience of playing the game before investing real money at the tables. The more you practice, the more your game improves.

Poker is played between players of varying skill-sets and experiences. To maintain your edge in the game, you have to learn every aspect of the game thoroughly and update yourself with the latest playing styles and techniques. Being a successful Poker player also requires reviewing your game consistently to identify the strongest and weakest points in your gameplay. You have to spot the mistakes you made at the game table to find out their causes and eliminate them permanently.

The facts associated with the game need to be highlighted in order to spread awareness about the true character of Poker. Never let the myths stop you from following what you love to do.

You can easily create an account on a gaming site to play Poker games online on your smartphones, laptops, tablets, etc. Poker apps are also available to install on your Android or iOS devices. The game is available in Texas Hold’em, Omaha, Omaha Hi-Lo, Hold’em ++, Crazy Pineapple variants.

Reasons Why Understanding of Mathematics is Important in Poker

Reasons Why Understanding of Mathematics is Important in Poker

Poker is a game of probabilities. We are not saying that you cannot win at all if you do not know much about maths, but yes, your probability of winning just gets lower. In addition to learning the basics of the game, it is essential to strengthen your understanding of poker math and probability concepts to ensure taking the right decisions at the right time at the tables. As you read further, you will understand why mathematics is considered one of the most crucial parts of the game:

Practical approach-

It is quite obvious that when you have thorough knowledge about anything, you depend on it more rather than your gut feeling. Likewise, in Poker, your understanding of  mathematical concepts helps you make better and more practical decisions. It makes your approach towards the game more concrete and helps you visualize things more clearly. Math also helps to avert your emotions from getting in the way, as you weigh it out by logic. You will prefer to go with your mathematical knowledge in hand selection rather than just depending on what your sixth sense tells you.

Upper hand-

When you sit at a game table, you find opponents of different personalities, batting pattern, and level of skills. Not everyone excels, and not everyone fails. Some have more knowledge than others, while others may have more experience. Nonetheless, those players who have comprehensive knowledge of mathematics have definitely an upper hand than those who have ‘little-to-no’ math knowledge. This is so because math forms the basis of most of the Poker tactics. You can predict whether you are going to make profits or lose your precious chips in the long run. You can do data analysis to categorize your opponents, predict their ranges, and identify the weak spots in their game to develop the perfect strategy to beat them. Consequently, when your mathematics is strong, you have a better shot than your opponent with limited mathematical knowledge.

Self-assurance-

Self-assurance is something which can make or break your game. If you become easily readable to your opponents, you will give away valuable information about your game unknowingly. Remember that confidence can only be achieved if you have your basics clear. When you possess confidence, it will naturally impact your ability to make good decisions. For example, when you know how to determine the pot odds, you will indeed be more confident and conclusive.

Bluff-

Every Poker player understands it very well that bluffing is one of the most effective strategies to implement at the Poker table. It can make you win the game when executed correctly within the boundary of Poker rules. Essentially, to bluff, you need to be alert and have to be able to identify your opponent’s weaknesses and strengths. You need to calculate outs to find out the odds of either your or your opponent improving the hand after the flop and take the best decisions. When you bluff, you don’t simply do it because of a random instinct but because math tells you to.
In short, mathematics can have a great impact on your success at offline or online Poker game tables. Of course, you won’t be required to learn a great deal, but a little knowledge of mathematics will be sufficient for any Poker player. That includes calculating the pot odds, equity, expected value and more. It may seem challenging at first, but once you get the hang of fundamentals of mathematics, you will pave a brighter future for yourself in the world of poker indefinitely.

How Counting Outs In Poker Is A Good Thing

How Counting Outs In Poker Is A Good Thing

Once you learn how to play poker, the next thing that you need to get your hands on is poker outs. It is a crucial skill that every poker player needs to master.

What exactly is poker outs?

It is the calculation of the total number of outs a player has to win a hand. Sounds complex, but if you practice the game regularly, you will get hold of poker outs.

It is true that playing with strong starting cards increases your possibility of winning the hand. But it is not possible to get the desired cards in every hand you play. Sometimes you receive poor or average cards and you put money into the pot with the expectation of completing the hand using the cards on the board. In such a situation, you can find out the possibility of making a hand that is better than your opponent, may be on turn or river, by calculating outs. Outs help you analyze whether your in-hand cards will help you create a winning hand.

Let’s take an example here:

You are playing Texas Hold’em poker. The dealer dealt A♣ K♣ to you and J♦ 9♦ to your opponent. The community cards on the flop are T♠ J♣ 3♣. Suppose your opponent shows you his hand, then how many outs do you have to win the hand. You have three aces and three kings - the outs to a higher pair, four queens for the nut straight, and nine clubs for the nut flush. So, you have 19 outs. Is the outs calculation right? NO; we double-counted one of the outs - the queen of clubs was counted twice. In total, you have 18 outs. An 18-out draw is very big as many cards are there to help you on the turn, and makes you a favorite against top pair on the flop.

Hand Range of Opponent

In any poker game, your opponent will never show you his hole cards. All you need to do is put your opponent on an approximate hand range to calculate your outs. No poker player can ever 100% analyze the hand of the opponent, so calculating outs will never be 100% accurate. Your outs calculations will be dependent on the hand range you put your opponent on.

Suppose in the above example you assume your opponent cards as J♠ J♥, then you would have fewer outs. Your three aces and kings would have given you the winning hand. You may have hit your hand on the turn but lose the hand on the river if the pair hit on board.  Always be prepared to hit the bad hand because sometimes a card that you think is an out may not give you the best hand.

Half Outs in Poker

There is a probability factor in the game of poker, because of which your assumed outs may sometimes count as half outs. To understand this, let's take a quick example:

You are deal 8♠ 9♠, and the board reads T♥ J♥ 3♦. You have eight poker outs - four sevens and four queens that will give you a straight. Correct? Sounds confusing! Actually, you have seven outs. In this case, you may hit the straight but that card can also make a flush for your opponent. You will have the second best hand on the table. Here, the Q♥ and the 7♥ are not full out and should only be counted as half outs. Meaning, in reality, you only have seven outs.

Hidden Outs in Poker

In this game of skill, players occasionally come across a hand that has hidden outs. These hidden outs may not immediately help your hand but they may affect your opponent's hand. Let’s take an example:

You are holding A♥ A♣ and your opponent is holding two pairs - 6♠ 5♥. The board reveals 5♠ 6♣ 9♦ K♥. On the river, you may hit the set by the A♦ or the A♠ or you may have the board pairing either with the nine or the king. This scenario would counterfeit two pair your opponent is holding and would give you an upper hand with higher winning two pair. It still improves your hand to a winning two pairs in case neither a nine nor a king hits your hole cards.

The golden rule - practice makes a man perfect - applies really well in online card games, and especially in a poker game. Once you learn how to calculate your outs, it will be easier for you to determine the pot odds and decide whether to continue with a hand or not. Once you master this key skill required in the game, the game gets simplified as you can play it two ways - investing your money in good cards or investing your money with good odds.
