Poker Tournaments - How They Work

A tournament is a series of games where the participants compete against each other for the Champion title and the top prize. The competition usually consists of multiple matches and based on the results of these matches, the ultimate winner ((individual or team) is determined.

A Poker tournament is a challenging but highly interesting format of the game where Poker players exhibit their skills to outwit opponents and win their share from the guaranteed prize pools.

Texas Poker is the most popular Poker tournament variant played across the globe. You need to pay the buy-in (entry fee) to gain entry into the tournament. The Poker room/online Poker platform takes a small portion of the buy-in for their service and the rest of it forms the prize pool.

Each participant receives the same amount of virtual chips at the beginning of the tournament. Your goal is to finish in the top position by winning all the chips in play and eliminating other players from the table.

If you leave the table during the game, you earn nothing from the prize pool. If you are among the last finishers, you will receive a share of the total prize money on the basis of your finishing position. The winner gets the largest portion of the prize pool.

You can participate in card games online SnG (Sit and Go) or MTT (Multi-Table Tournament) with real money and take home fabulous rewards. In an SnG tournament, you can join a table anytime as the game starts whenever the tables are full. MTTs start at a specific time and you need to register yourself first to join the game table.

Types of Poker tournaments:

Rebuy Tournament
In this format, you can rebuy chips to remain seated on the table when you lose all your chips while playing. The rebuy time is limited and once it expires, the player cannot buy more chips. Usually, the re-buy amount is the same as the initial buy-in amount.

There are two types of rebuy tournaments:
  1. Limited Re-Buy: You can rebuy only for the limited number of times during the rebuy period.
  2. Unlimited Re-Buy: You can re-buy an unlimited number of times during the rebuy period.

Freeze-out Tournament
In this format, the players cannot re-buy when they are out of chips. It is the simplest tournament format where once you lose all your chips, you are out of the tournament as you cannot add more chips to your stack to return to the table.

Re-Entry Tournament
This format allows you to re-enter the tournament once you get eliminated. If you bust during the late registration period, you can register yourself again by paying the buy-in and enter the tournament as a new player. You cannot re-enter once the late registration period ends.

Satellite Tournament
Satellites are qualifying tournaments which reward you with entry tickets for various major online or offline Poker tournaments. It provides players with the opportunity to participate in expensive tournaments with big prize pools without paying their huge buy-in. You can play a satellite with nominal buy-in and instead of money, win a seat to bigger buy-in tournaments as the prize.
